March 2010 Newsletter

Miramichi Sportsmens Club

The annual gun club meeting was held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Newcastle Lions Club. This meeting was well attended and a new executive for 2010 was elected with the following results:

President: Harold Parlee
Vice President: Doug Getty
Treasurer: Harold Parlee
Secretary: Eldon Rogers

Faction Chairmen:

Pistol: Doug Getty
Rifle: Alexis Robichaud
Shotgun: Paul Nowlan

A number of topics were discussed at the meeting but the most urgent item discussed was getting the rifle range recertified . Harold stated that we have $12000 to build a berm but last year we had trouble getting a contractor to do this work. After a lot of discussion it was decided that we would shorten the range to 200 meters (8 Lanes) and build a new berm. Alexis is going to see if he can get a contractor to bid on this project and we hope to have the work completed some time in June or as soon as the range is dry enough for the work to be completed. (assuming a contractor can be hired) If any gun club member knows of a contractor who might be interested in this project have him contact Harold or Alexis. UNTIL THE BERM IS BROUGHT UP TO GOVERNMENT STANDARDS AND CERTIFIED, THE RIFLE RANGE IS CLOSED TO SHOOTERS. The rifle shooters can use the pistol range to do sight-ins, until the rifle range is recertified.

Also discussed at the meeting was that we develop a newsletter and mail it to all members from 2008 and 2009. By doing this we hope to encourage as many members both past and present to renew their membership as this is very important to the operation of our gun club. We also hope to get the local paper to do a story on our gun club to show the general public what a complete facility we have. Each faction also gave a report on the activities at each range for 2009.

2010
Rifle Range

Alexis is already searching for a contractor to do the work needed to have the range certified. As soon as we have any news as to when this work will be done we will post it on our website.

Pistol Range

The pistol section has booked three I.P.S.C. matches for the 2010 shooting season. All club members are invited to come out and participate in these matches. Although they are booked as matches, they are essentially fun days on the range. All matches to begin at 9;00 A.M. Saturday, May 15th Saturday, August 21st and Saturday, October 16th, 2010

Match Registration Fees again this year will be $20.00 and shooters will require approx. 250 rounds of ammo per match.

Anyone interested in participating in any shooting discipline (ie P.P.C. Bull’s-eye or Cowboy Action) should contact the pistol co-ordinator and these styles of shooting can be arranged. I would like to host a .22 match this summer if there is any interest. Anyone interested should contact me and if enough interest is shown, we will make it happen.

We have checked with DNR recently to ascertain what is involved in clearing the trees to the left of the pistol range in order to extend the range. In late August, we will be looking for a few volunteers with power saws to start knocking down trees. Firewood from these trees will be available to club members for the cost per cord that is owed to the DNR. We would like to have the softwood sawed into lumber for use in our buildings at the range. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Any volunteers would be appreciated. CONTACT: Doug Getty 622-7817 or E-Mail
